Alan (Screen Study)

The reflective, smooth surface of the aluminium panel causes the paint to react. The toothless surface displays the paint as a textural being - it cannot be blended into the fibres of the panel like on canvas. It becomes streaky and thick, it becomes a surface on top of the panel. As such, the paint and the support are distinct. 

The reflectivity of the metal reacts to changes in light cast onto it, glowing outwards from behind the paint. The painting is therefore, backlit. Including the blue in this portrait alludes to the blue solarisation effect of the digital screen - it becomes something other.
